Questionnaire survey on PET examination in Europe

Hiroaki Nagaoka, Center for Radiological Sciences, Iwate Medical University Hospital

I attended the Annual Congress of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) held in Istanbul, Turkey between October 16 and 19, 2005. A questionnaire survey on PET was conducted in participants. The current status of PET examinations in European countries was compared with that in Japan. The questionnaire survey was conducted by interview at the conference hall of the EANM. Questions included management of facilities, patient waiting room, and waste disposal. The number of PET scanners in individual countries was surveyed. The number of PET scanners increased in Italy and France in which FDG delivery service started; it dramatically increased in Japan and the United States. Correction and maintenance of the scanners were more frequent in Europe. Many institutions in Europe isolated patients for a while after the end of examination. More than 80% of institutions provided patients with instructions on radiation exposure after discharge from hospital. More than 80% of institutions disposed waste as radioactive waste. The questionnaire survey successfully outlined the current status of PET and related issues in European countries.

The next EANM will be held in Greece. Letfs participate in the congress in Athens.
